Calgary court hears arguments over video confession of accused in newborn deaths

CALGARY – A prosecutor says a Calgary woman accused of killing two of her newborns was fully aware of the consequences of a video confession.

Jayme (JAY’-mee) Williams wants the court to rule that two videos of police interviews with Meredith Borowiec (BOHR’-oh-wick) be admissible as evidence.

She says Borowiec was aware of her right to remain silent and the confessions were entirely voluntary.

Williams says there’s no indication of threats, promises or trickery.

Borowiec was charged with second-degree murder in 2011 after an investigation that led police to believe two newborns were put in bags and thrown into garbage receptacles.

She faces a separate attempted murder trial for a third infant who was rescued from a trash bin in 2010.
