UPDATE: Man killed after crashing into log boom identified

The man who died in a personal watercraft accident after hitting a log boom at Traders Cover on Okanagan Lake Aug. 24 has been identified.

He was Patrick Mangold, 47, from Kelowna.

Mangold's family has been notified of his death.

A man on a personal watercraft died after hitting a log boom in the dark at Traders Cove on Okanagan Lake Saturday night.

Around 8:25 p.m., 911 received a call about an accident involving a personal watercraft just north of Bear Creek Provincial Park.

A man in his 40s suffered a traumatic head injury.

The accident was called-in by the people on a pleasure craft in the area.

“They heard a noise, a bang and went over to investigate,” Kelowna Fire Department platoon captain Dale Calhoun says. “They saw the Sea-Do was up on the log boom and there was a person there.”

The Fire Department’s rescue boat was in the area and arrived at the crash site quickly.

“They found the man. He had severe head injuries.”

The firefighters took the injured man to the Kelowna Yacht Club. From there he was rushed to Kelowna Hospital by ambulance.

He was pronounced dead on arrival.

West Kelowna RCMP say the victim had been wearing personal flotation device (PDF).

The victim’s name and hometown won’t be released until the RCMP contact the man’s family.

Few details are being released by the West Kelowna RCMP about the death of a man riding a personal watercraft on Okanagan Lake Saturday night.

Around 8:25 p.m., police received a call about an accident involving a personal watercraft near Traders Cove just north of Bear Creek Provincial Park.

“An adult male in his 40s had been riding a personal water craft and was located in the water with trauma to his head,” Cst. Martha Kennedy says in a media release.

The Kelowna Fire Department’s rescue boat took the injured man to the Kelowna Yacht Club. From there he was rushed to Kelowna Hospital by ambulance.

He died in hospital from the head injury.

Police say the victim had been wearing personal flotation device (PDF).

The victim’s name and hometown won’t be released until the RCMP tell the man’s family about his death.
