Canadian men’s water polo team misses out on Rio after 8-7 loss to Spain

TRIESTE, Italy – The Canadian men’s water polo team will not be heading to the Rio Olympics this summer.

Canada dropped an 8-7 decision to Spain in quarter-final play at the Olympic qualification tournament on Friday.

The four semifinalists at the event will fill out the 12-team field in Rio. Spain joins an Olympic field that includes Australia, Brazil, Croatia, Greece, Japan, Montenegro, Serbia and the United States.

Canada opened the scoring but Spain rallied and took a 4-3 lead into the half. Spain pulled away in the third period with three more goals and held off a late comeback for the one-point victory.

Hungary, France and Italy earned the other remaining berths Friday, also with one-point wins. Hungary shaded Germany 8-7, France edged the Netherlands 12-11 and Italy topped Romania 8-7.

Canada was unbeaten in round-robin play with three wins and two draws.
