Gangster with B.C.’s UN gang sentenced to 12 years for murder plot against rivals

VANCOUVER – A senior member of a B.C. crime gang has been sentenced to 12 years for his role in a conspiring to kill members of a rival gang, and the fatal shooting of a stereo installer.

Thirty-two-year-old Daniel Russell will receive double credit for time he has already served in custody, leaving four years and two months left in his sentence.

Russell pleaded guilty earlier this week, but most of the evidence presented as part of the plea and sentencing are covered under a publication ban because of trials for his co-accused that have yet to take place.

Russell, a senior member of the United Nations gang, pleaded guilty to conspiring to kill rivals Jonathan Bacon, James Bacon and Jarrod Bacon and their Red Scorpions gang associates.

He also admitted to manslaughter for his role in the fatal shooting of Jonathan Barber on May 9, 2008.

Barber, a stereo installer with no connections to gangs or organized crime, was driving a Porsche along a Vancouver street in Burnaby and was killed when the vehicle was sprayed by bullets.
