The Latest: Report cites bias by San Francisco police

SAN FRANCISCO – The Latest on federal findings on bias within the San Francisco Police Department (all times local):

A report by the U.S. Department of Justice says there are numerous indicators of bias against minority groups by members of the San Francisco Police Department.

The report also found the majority of deadly use of force incidents by the department involved persons of colour.

The findings were discussed at a news conference Wednesday.

City officials requested the review following the shooting death of Mario Woods, a young black man, and the discovery of homophobic and racist text messages exchanged between officers.

Woods’ shooting sparked protests and led to the resignation of then-Police Chief Greg Suhr.

The DOJ’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services conducted the review. Its findings are not binding on the department.

The U.S. Department of Justice is set to release findings of a review of use of force and other practices by San Francisco police amid heightened racial tensions.

The findings will be discussed at a news conference Wednesday that is scheduled to include the U.S. Attorney in San Francisco, Brian Stretch, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and San Francisco Interim Police Chief Toney Chaplin.

City officials requested the review following the shooting death of a young black man, Mario Woods, last year and the emergence of homophobic and racist text messages exchanged between officers.

Woods’ shooting sparked protests and calls for then-Police Chief Greg Suhr’s resignation. Suhr resigned in May.

The DOJ’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services conducted the review. Its findings are not binding on the department.
