Election spending, emergency services at issue as Labrador contenders debate

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Contenders in Labrador’s closely watched federal byelection are squaring off for a debate Tuesday night on issues as diverse as election spending and search and rescue services.

The vote May 13 was called after Conservative incumbent Peter Penashue (pen-ASH’-away) resigned over 28 illegal election contributions.

He faces off in Happy Valley-Goose Bay against Liberal challenger Yvonne Jones and NDP candidate Harry Borlase.

The debate is to be broadcast on VOCM Radio at 7:30 p.m. local time.

Penashue blamed his former official agent for mistakenly accepting illegal donations during the 2011 campaign.

They included cash from 16 listed corporations and non-monetary contributions from two airlines that flew Penashue around the vast riding.

Penashue beat former Liberal incumbent Todd Russell by just 79 votes to win the only Conservative seat in the province.

Russell decided not to run again.
