Summerland police issue reminder during Distracted Driving Month

PENTICTON – March is distracted driving month and Summerland RCMP are sending a message to motorists that it’s a priority with the detachment not only this month, but throughout the year.

Summerland RCMP detachment commander Cpl. Chis Richardson says distracted driving contributes to more than a quarter of fatal car crashes in B.C.

“Driving is a skill that should not be underestimated. A few seconds of distraction can lead to deadly consequences,” he says in a media release.

Richardson also says Summerland RCMP responded to a residence in the community on March 17 after receiving a call about a drug overdose. The subject was found in a non-responsive state but regained consciousness prior to being taken to hospital.

RCMP members also responded to a single vehicle crash on Arkell Road and Highway 97 on March 18. The vehicle struck the highway median causing minor damage, but had to be towed as a result. No injuries were reported and no charges laid in the incident.

Summerland RCMP also investigated the theft of a 'Texas mickey,' a large bottle of whiskey valued at $142, taken from Peach’s Perch.

A suspect was recorded on video during the incident and the store released the video on social media. RCMP have since identified the man and charges are pending.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
