Maine: Driver in fatal hayride crash knew brakes were bad
BATH, Maine – A prosecutor intends to show that the driver of a Jeep involved in a fatal Halloween-themed hayride crash in Maine knew the brakes were defective.
Jurors were told Thursday that a witness will testify David Brown expressed concerns about the brakes the night before the crash two years ago in Mechanic Falls. But Brown’s attorney says the complete brake failure could not have been anticipated.
Brown is on trial in Sagadahoc County Superior Court for reckless conduct.
A grand jury also indicted Harvest Hill Farms, where the accident occurred and a mechanic who worked on the Jeep. All have pleaded not guilty.
Twenty-two passengers were hospitalized following the crash in October 2014, and 17-year-old Cassidy Charette was fatally injured.
