Stage version of ‘Anastasia’ slated for Broadway next season

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Another princess is heading to Broadway. This time she’s Russian.

A musical stage adaptation of the 1997 animated musical film “Anastasia” will land on Broadway during the 2016-17 season. No cast or theatre was announced. The show is making its world premiere at Hartford Stage this summer.

The new work will reunite much of the creative team behind “Ragtime” — book writer Terrence McNally, composer Stephen Flaherty and lyricist Lynn Ahrens. Darko Tresnjak, who directed “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” will direct “Anastasia.”

The story centres on the Russian czar’s youngest daughter, who escapes the night her family is killed and lives as a peasant orphan for years before remembering who she is.
