Quebec’s culture minister takes leave of absence for health reasons

QUEBEC – Quebec’s culture minister is taking a leave of absence for health reasons after just a few months in cabinet.

Premier Philippe Couillard’s office issued a statement today saying Luc Fortin will be off work indefinitely.

His cabinet duties will be split between two other people.

Higher Education Minister Helene David will take over Fortin’s responsibilities in culture and protection of the French language, while Agriculture Minister Pierre Paradis will become the point man for the Estrie region southeast of Montreal.

Fortin became a full-fledged cabinet minister last February after another minister, Pierre Moreau, had to leave politics because of health issues.

The premier told reporters near Quebec City that Fortin needs rest before returning to work but Couillard added he would not comment on the nature of the illness.
