Vernon building being torn down to make way for parking

VERNON – A downtown Vernon building is coming down.

The city owned building at the corner of 29 Street and 30 Avenue will start getting demolished Monday, April 3.

Crews are expected to spend eight to ten weeks tearing down the building, which used to house the New Delhi Indian Restaurant on one end, and the Open Door Learning Centre on the other.

Once completed, the property will be used for public parking, according to a release from the City of Vernon.

In 2014, there was a suspicious fire in the New Delhi Restaurant. This past December, a lawsuit was filed against the restaurant’s owners, alleging they set the fire on purpose, or caused it through negligence.

School District 22’s Open Door Learning Centre, which leased the building from the city, was asked to vacate in 2015. The program has since moved and set up shop at 3303-30 Street.

The release says there are no anticipated road closures during demolition.
