The Latest: Candlelight vigil held for superintendent

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. – The Latest on New Jersey superintendent killed by student driver while out jogging (all times local):

11:15 p.m.

A candlelight vigil has been held for a New Jersey school superintendent who was struck and killed by a car driven by a student in his district.

Police say Robbinsville Superintendent Steven Mayer was jogging with his dog near his home Tuesday morning when he was hit by a 17-year-old senior who was on her way to school for a class trip. The dog also was killed.

Schools closed Tuesday and grief counselling was made available to students and the community.

A candlelight vigil was held later that night, with about 500 people in attendance. Mourners placed candles alongside flowers, and some wrote messages to Mayer’s family.

Schools in the district will be closed again Wednesday.

Police say a New Jersey school superintendent out jogging was struck and killed by a car driven by a student in his district.

Robbinsville Superintendent Steven Mayer was hit Tuesday near his home and the high school. The dog also was killed.

No tickets or charges have been filed against the student.

All Robbinsville schools are closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Grief counselling is available to students and the community. A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Tuesday night.

Mayer was the married father of three children.

The district has three schools and 2,858 students.
