Spallumcheen home burns to the ground

SPALLUMCHEEN – When fire crews arrived at a home in Spallumcheen Sunday night, half the house was already consumed by fire and the flames were roaring out of control.

Armstrong and Spallumcheen fire chief Ian Cummings says they were called out just before 7 p.m. to a home on Demorest Road.

It’s a long, narrow, private washboarded dirt road, which presented challenges for the fire trucks as the drivers tried to navigate their way to the burning house at the end of the track.

Since the house was already gone, firefighters focused their effort on containing the inferno so the flames didn’t spread to the surrounding forest.

Cummings says they were successful.

The owner of the house wasn’t home and no one was hurt fighting the fire.

No word yet on what sparked the blaze. Investigators will be on the scene Monday looking for the cause.
