Former commanding officer with Canadian Forces charged with sex assault

OTTAWA – Canadian Forces investigators have charged a former commanding officer at CFB Wainwright in Alberta with sexual assault.

Maj. David Yurczyszyn is also charged with drunkenness and disgraceful conduct under sections of the National Defence Act.

A military release says the alleged offences occurred last Nov. 11.

Maj. Kevin Cadman of the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service says the charges are considered “significant” and action has been taken accordingly.

Cadman says members of the Armed Forces are expected to conduct themselves professionally at all times.

Yurczyszyn, who was assigned to train Afghan troops in Afghanistan in 2008, had taken over command of CFB Wainwright last June.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service is a unit within the independent Canadian Forces military police.
