Power tool blamed for fire on HMCS Toronto during upgrades at Irving shipyard

HALIFAX – A portable power tool is getting the blame for a fire aboard a navy frigate currently undergoing upgrades at the Irving shipyard in Halifax.

A statement from Irving says a 911 call was made by Irving Shipbuilding around 10:15 p.m. Thursday because of fire and smoke seen aboard HMCS Toronto.

Halifax firefighters and DND fire response extinguished the fire by 11:10 p.m.

Irving says 64 people were working on board and all were safely evacuated from the ship.

Two were sent to hospital for evaluation, and both were released before midnight.

Irving says a power tool battery caused the fire, and the ship was cleared for normal operations Friday morning.
