TORONTO – “Income Property” host Scott McGillivray is used to being the only one calling the shots on his televised home renovation projects.
But on the new series “Home to Win,” which premieres Sunday on HGTV Canada, he’s one of 20 network personalities weighing in on how to transform a newly purchased property into a dream home.
With such a sizable chorus of independent voices, McGillivray admitted a key concern was not being in tune with the project — or one another.
“It was exciting, but at the same time, it was a bit nerve-racking because it’s like: ‘Oh, my gosh, we’re all going to be working on this together? Are egos going to clash? Are we not going to agree on certain things?’” McGillivray said in a recent interview alongside fellow cast members Mike Holmes, Jr., Sebastian Clovis, Tiffany Pratt, Samantha Pynn and Sarah Baeumler.
“(But) I have to say, as soon as we all got on set, it was a really comfortable vibe.”
“Home to Win” documents a nearly year-long process of purchasing and revamping the property and concludes with an hour-long challenge episode with three hopefuls vying to win the home.
“It’s a little bit of country, a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll…. We’re dealing with a lot of different styles, a lot of different trends, a lot of different points of view; and I believe our voices are all being heard,” said Pratt, designer on “Buy It, Sell It, Fix It.”
“It feels really, really cohesive.”
The series premiere starts at the house-hunting phase with groups divided in search of properties in disparate categories and locations — urban, suburban, country and unconventional.
“Some of us were looking in Toronto, and then some people were looking out West, and some people were looking in the country and the suburbs,” said McGillivray.
“It was a matter of all coming together and deciding this was the one that we’re going to be able to create the most value.”
