The Latest: Fiorina: Trump, Clinton 2 sides of same coin

BANGOR, Maine – The Latest on the Maine GOP convention (all times local):

1:45 p.m.

Former Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina isn’t mincing words about Donald Trump.

Fiorina, who’s backing Ted Cruz for the Republican presidential nomination, rallied supporters of the Texas senator at the Maine GOP convention on Saturday, describing Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton as “two sides of the same coin.”

Fiorina said the GOP needs someone willing to fight the system and that Trump “is the system.”

She said Cruz has made enemies because he’s willing to fight the system.

Fiorina was one of two former presidential candidates to address the Maine Republican convention. Ben Carson, who supports Trump, delivered an address Friday night. Speaking in support of Ohio Gov. John Kaish on Saturday was former New Hampshire Sen. John Sununu.

Maine Gov. Paul LePage is among GOP delegates headed to the national convention in Cleveland.

LePage was selected as a delegate Saturday during caucuses at the state GOP convention, assuring that he’ll be going to Cleveland in July.

LePage, who supports New York businessman Donald Trump, had angered some supporters of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz by floating a list of delegates that he’d vetted. Cruz won the Maine GOP presidential caucuses and some Cruz supporters wanted an all-Cruz slate that would’ve left out the governor.

Results from the Maine caucuses are binding at the first vote at the national convention with 12 for Cruz, nine for Trump and two for Ohio Gov. John Kasich. But the delegates can change their support after the first vote, drawing attention on the individual candidates.

The Maine GOP is meeting to elect delegates to the national convention before Gov. Paul LePage delivers closing remarks at the state meeting in Bangor.

The Maine Republican Party made the results of the presidential caucuses binding with 12 for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, nine for New York businessman Donald Trump and two for Ohio Gov. John Kasich, but delegates are bound only for the first vote.

The prospect of Maine delegates changing their support on subsequent votes at a contested national convention in Cleveland and politicking by 199 delegate candidates added drama before Saturday’s tallies.

Also on tap Saturday are addresses by former GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, former U.S. Sen. John Sununu of New Hampshire, and U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin of Maine.
