Third fire since May hits Albuquerque Route 66 motel

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A third fire since May has struck an abandoned Albuquerque Route 66 motel and apartment complex made famous in the 2007 movie “No Country for Old Men.”

Officials say firefighters were called Saturday evening to the Desert Sands Motel and found a fire in a unit. Crews extinguished the fire within minutes. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters also were called in June to the blaze at the motel. Investigators believe the fire may have been started by a homeless person who managed to get into the boarded up property.

In addition, a May 24th fire destroyed most of the complex’s 63 units and forced residents out of their homes. A 37-year-old woman faces an arson charge.

The hotel was the scene of a final shootout in the movie “No Country for Old Men” starring Oscar-winner Javier Bardem.
