Salmon Arm RCMP crack down on rule-breaking drivers

SALMON ARM – A traffic blitz in Salmon Arm netted a number of drivers caught breaking the rules of the road.

Salmon Arm RCMP and the Provincial Highway Patrol Unit conducted a traffic blitz in the Trans Canada Corridor in Salmon Arm April 3, 2017, Sgt. Scott West says in a media release.

Mounties focused their efforts on intersection infractions as well as distracted driving at the intersection of Shuswap Street SW and the Trans Canada Highway.

“Approximately one third of the tickets issued were for distracted driving offences, drivers using cellular devices while driving, and the balance were for yellow light at the intersection,” West says in the release.

Of the drivers served violation tickets one was operating a commercial vehicle. A total of nine tickets were handed out in two hours.

“The Salmon Arm RCMP with our partners in the Southeast District Highway Patrol Unit will continue to conduct random patrols at various intersections in the Salmon Arm area and would like to remind motorists that the use of hand held electronic devices while driving is strictly prohibited,” West says.

The penalty for using a hand held electronic device in BC is $368 and includes driving demerit points.
