Manitoba premier did not break elections law: elections commissioner

WINNIPEG – Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger has been cleared of any wrongdoing in an election campaign promise involving the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets.

A report from Elections Commissioner Bill Bowles, obtained by The Canadian Press, has rejected a complaint from the Liberal Party that Selinger violated the Elections Finances Act.

The Liberals complained after Selinger announced a partnership with the Jets’ charitable foundation for a new after-school program for inner-city youth.

The Liberals said the announcement violated a section of the law that forbids government programs from being announced during an election campaign.

Bowles has ruled that the announcement was clearly a NDP campaign promise and not a government announcement.

Selinger says he’s glad he has been cleared and wants to develop more programs for young people.
