Some opposed to commercial development ideas for Fort Gorges
PORTLAND, Maine – A man looking to bring commercial development to an historic fort in Maine is facing opposition.
Mike Dugay says he’d like to see a restaurant, brewpub and a bed-and-breakfast at the 160-year-old Fort Gorges in Casco Bay.
The Portland Press Herald reports some members of Friends of Fort Gorges believe Dugay’s plans are incompatible with its mission to preserve the structure.
The fort was commissioned after the War of 1812. It’s only accessible by private boat. An estimated 6,000 people visit annually.
Parks officials say $6 million worth of work is needed to stabilize the park and make it accessible.
The friends group has partnered with Portland to raise funds to make improvements to the fort.
Portland’s Parks Commission is hosting a forum Wednesday to discuss the fort’s future.
