The Latest: Armed standoff in Pico Rivera comes to an end

PICO RIVERA, Calif. – The Latest on a police standoff with an armed man in a Los Angeles suburb (all times local):

3:23 p.m.

An armed man who barricaded himself in a home for nearly 24 hours and fired shots at Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies has been taken into custody.

City News Service said the suspect was apprehended Monday afternoon. The man was not immediately named and no information was provided on how he was detained.

Officials say nobody was hurt when the man opened fire from inside a home in Pico Rivera during the standoff that began Sunday afternoon.

Deputy Sara Rodriguez says about 15 neighbouring homes were evacuated.

The man’s mother emerged from the house after SWAT officers fired gas into the house.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials say nobody was hurt when an armed suspect opened fire from inside a home during a standoff in Pico Rivera that’s entering its second day.

Deputy Sara Rodriguez says about 15 neighbouring homes have been evacuated since the unidentified man holed himself up inside his house with a shotgun Sunday afternoon.

Rodriguez says the man’s mother came out when SWAT officers fired gas into the house, but the suspect remains inside Monday. The man has sporadically fired shots at sheriff’s equipment and personnel, but nobody has been hurt.

Rodriguez says officials have been unsuccessful in trying to contact the man and determine his motives.
