The Latest: Ex-US Rep. Renzi leaves prison after 3 years

PHOENIX – The Latest on former U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi’s release from federal prison (all times local):

5:25 p.m.

Former Arizona Congressman Rick Renzi has been released from a federal prison after serving three years for corruption, money laundering and other charges.

He walked free just ahead of his scheduled Saturday release date. His attorney, Kelly B. Kramer, declined to comment on his client’s plans after prison.

Renzi was convicted in 2013 of conspiring to use his congressional post to make companies buy his former business associate’s land so the associate could repay a debt to Renzi.

Renzi represented Arizona’s 1st Congressional District from 2003 to 2009. He didn’t seek re-election in 2008 while facing charges.

Renzi began serving his sentence at a federal prison in Morgantown, West Virginia, and completed it at a federal Bureau of Prisons facility in Washington, D.C.
