Bike thefts and burning propane tank highlight Summerland police calls

SUMMERLAND – Summerland RCMP have seen a rise in bicycle theft in recent days.

RCMP say they are investigating the theft of a specialized stump jumper 20 speed bicycle, taken from the 7200 block of Simpson Road sometime overnight on April 7.

The same day, police responded to a residence in the 12000 block of Lakeshore Drive south after the owner of a red, Norco Bush Pilot, 21 speed bike reported it stolen, according to an RCMP media release. The bike has an electric motor attached to it.

A third complaint of a stolen bike was received from the 5800 block of Dale Avenue, again on April 7. The bike is a grey, Giant Reign 21 speed and was believed stolen sometime between March 19 and April 1.

RCMP also assisted the Summerland Fire Department with traffic control on April 16 after both services were called to a propane tank left burning in the middle of the road in the 12000 block of Giants Head Road.

Police say the tank had been extinguished by firefighters but had sustained damage due to heat. The possibility of the tank exploding was very real, but due to quick response by Summerland firefighters the fire was extinguished before an explosion could occur.

Investigation of the incident revealed the owner was testing a new propane torch when the hose and tank caught fire, RCMP say. He dragged the unit to the centre of the road prior to calling 911.

No charges are pending in the incident.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
