Flood threat in Nicola Lake and River after warm weather, rain

MERRITT – April rain, warm weather and a melting snowpack have brought the threat of localized flooding to the Nicola Lake and River.

Water levels in Nicola Lake have risen over the last 15 days, according to a release from the provincial government.

Right now, the lake's water level is about one metre below flooding level and experts predict the levels will rise over the next month.

Locals should expect some shoreline flooding and prepare for possible flooding in low areas. The release recommends that residents move equipment and other assets to higher ground if possible.

When the river is running with a high water level, it causes the banks to become unstable and the collapse is possible, the province says. Keep away from riverbanks and make sure kids and pets do the same.
