Police detain shooter near California zoo; many shots fired

OAKLAND, Calif. – Officials say a gunman who fired numerous shots Friday morning in east Oakland near the zoo has been disarmed and is in police custody.

Officers were called to a neighbourhood near the Oakland Zoo for a report of a man armed with a rifle and shooting in the neighbourhood, police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said.

When officers arrived, the suspect was in the street and began shooting at the officers.

Police returned fire and the suspect was hit. He remains hospitalized in serious condition, Watson said. His name and age were not released.

Officers found a rifle with a scope at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

A nearby stretch of eastbound Interstate 580 has reopened, and a shelter-in-place order for the area has been lifted. Some closures in the area remain, including two freeway off-ramps, Watson said.
