Iran summons French envoy over Paris rally
TEHRAN, Iran – Iran’s Foreign Ministry has summoned the French ambassador over a Paris rally held last weekend by an exiled Iranian opposition group.
The rally was held by the political wing of the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, a group devoted to overthrowing the Iranian government. Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein welcomed the MEK and supported it from the 1980s until his overthrow, and the State Department listed the MEK as a terrorist group until 2012.
Iran had earlier criticized the participation of Prince Turki al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia’s former intelligence chief, in the rally. The ministry said Tuesday that his presence showed the “impudence and stupidity” of Saudi Arabia, and accused the kingdom of supporting terrorism.
Iran and Saudi Arabia are bitterly divided regional rivals who back opposite sides in the wars in Syria and Yemen.
