Canada Revenue Agency phone scam making the rounds in Penticton again

PENTICTON – A familiar phone scam is making the rounds in the Peach City, inundating the Penticton RCMP with calls.

Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth says the detachment received 20 complaints today, May 17, alone about a scam in which someone pretending to be representing the Canada Revenue Agency calls to demand payment.

"I want to remind the public the Canada Revenue Agency does not call demanding payment and they do not threaten people. If someone calls identifying themselves as representing the CRA just hang up,” Wrigglesworth says in a media release.

He says there is no need to call police afterwards after the call.

“If you have hung up the phone and not provided any information, there is nothing to worry about. If you have been a victim of an actual fraud, please report that."

Wriggleworth says the calls appear to be originating from an area code in India, but some calls utilize a transfer service that identifies a North American source.
