Md. hospital shuts down NICU again over deadly bacteria
CHEVERLY, Md. – For the second time in three months, a Maryland hospital has shut down its neonatal intensive care unit after babies tested positive for potentially deadly bacteria.
According to media reports, Prince George’s Hospital Center announced Wednesday that two infants have tested positive for an antibiotic-resistant bacterium known as pseudomonas.
The hospital says five babies are being transferred to other hospitals that have intensive-care units.
The hospital previously shut down its NICU in August after three infants tested positive for pseudomonas, which can lead to serious illness or death for people with compromised immune system.
Prince George’s Hospital Center is the suburban Washington county’s publicly funded hospital. It’s expected to close in 2020 after a new hospital is built in Largo.
