Canadian Forces Base to raise Pride flag to show support for GLBT community
EDMONTON – In what could be a first in Canada, the rainbow-coloured Pride Flag is to be raised at a military base in Edmonton.
A soldier at the base made the request for the flag-raising ceremony through the chain of command to the base commander, and his request was granted.
Lt. (Navy) Jessica MacDonald, a base spokeswoman, says the flagis meant to show that the Canadian Forces promotes inclusiveness, equality and dignity.
The Pride Flag, a symbol for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people, is to be flown near the base headquarters building.
MacDonald says people on the base have been supportive and there has been no backlash.
Base commander Lt. Col. John Reissenstein, soldiers and civilians from the GLBT community will watch as the flag is raised Friday morning.
