Departing Blue Jays manager one of city’s longest-serving bench bosses

TORONTO – The Toronto Blue Jays announced Wednesday that manager John Gibbons won’t return in 2019.

Gibbons has spent 11 seasons over two stints as the Jays’ manager. Here’s a look at other coaches who spent significant time with some of Toronto’s professional teams:

Toronto Maple Leafs

Punch Imlach — 12 years (1958-69, 1980). Posted 370-275-125 regular-season record, 44-48 playoff record. Won the Stanley Cup 1962-64, 1967.

Hap Day — 10 years(1940-1950). Posted 259-206-81 regular-season record, 49-31 playoff record. Won the Stanley Cup 1942, 1945, 1947-49.

Dick Irvin — Nine years (1931-1940). Posted 216-152-59 regular-season record, 33-32-1 playoff record. Won the 1932 Stanley Cup.

Pat Quinn — Seven years (1998-2006), 574 games, 300-196-78, 41-39 playoff record.

Toronto Raptors

Dwane Casey — Seven years (2011-18). Posted 320-238 regular-season record, 21-30 playoff record. Was 2017 NBA coach of the year.

Sam Mitchell — Five years (2004-09). Posted 156-189 record, 3-8 playoff record. Was 2007 NBA coach of the year.

Toronto Argonauts

Bob O’Billovich — 11 years (1982-1989, 1993-95). Posted 107-104-3 regular-season record, 6-8 playoff record. Was CFL coach of the year in 1982 and ’87, won ’83 Grey Cup.

Lew Hayman — Nine years (1932-41). Posted 40-15-2 regular-season record, 20-12 playoff record. Won 1933, 1937-38 Grey Cups.

Michael (Pinball) Clemons — Eight years (2000-07). Posted 67-54-1 regular-season record, 6-5 playoff record. Won the ’04 Grey Cup.

Toronto Blue Jays

Cito Gaston — 12 years (1989-1991, 1992-1997, 2008-2010). Posted 894-837 record. Won two pennants, 1992-93 World Series.

John Gibbons — 11 years (2004-’08, 2013-present). Has posted 791-787 record, 10-10 playoff record. Guided Blue Jays to the American League Championship Series in 2015-2016.

Toronto FC

Greg Vanney — In his fifth year. Has posted 54-36 record. He led Toronto FC to two MLS finals, winning in 2017. He was ’17 MLS and CONCACAF coach of the year.
