Police investigate shooting involving Brazilian candidate

RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazilian police are investigating a shooting incident involving a candidate running for Sao Paulo governor.

Adriano da Costa e Silva of the Christian Democracy Party was leaving an event with his campaign co-ordinator Hamilton Munhoz on Wednesday night when two motorcyclists started firing at their car.

Police said that da Costa e Silva and Munhoz were armed and tried to shoot back.

A medical report said they were released from the hospital Thursday. Both were wearing bulletproof vests and did not suffer bullet wounds.

Violence has tainted the run-up to Brazil’s general elections on Oct. 7.

Far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro was stabbed during a rally last month, and a bus belonging to the caravan of former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was shot at in March.
