UK’s Prince Philip spends 92nd birthday in hospital recovering from abdominal surgery

LONDON – Prince Philip is spending his 92nd birthday in a London hospital recovering from abdominal surgery.

Queen Elizabeth II’s husband is expected to be in hospital for two weeks for treatment of an unspecified illness.

Officials say he is “progressing satisfactorily” after the exploratory surgery. Results of various tests are expected this week, but it is not clear if the details will be made public.

In the past, he has suffered heart and bladder problems but seemed in good spirits when he was last seen in public at a garden party Thursday.

He is being treated at a private London clinic.

His birthday is being officially celebrated by two extended gun salutes.
