Votes equal dollars for Brock Community Kitchen

KAMLOOPS – The Brock Activity Centre in Kamloops needs a community kitchen and to raise the money the project has been entered in national charity contest.

Voting will begin Monday as charities and not-for-profits compete for a piece of the $1-million on offer from the Aviva Community Fund.

The insurance company will award cash prizes to organizations which have the support of their communities as measured by clicks at a contest website. There is also a complex judging process once the groups make it to the finals.

The Centre for Seniors Information BC Interior Society, located in the Brock Shopping Mall, was built with over 1,800 volunteer hours and financial support from the local business and the community at large. The Centre provides space for social activities, support services, information and education, advocacy and grief support.

The Society has over 600 members and serves about 20,000 older adults.

The group’s submission says it wants to build a fully functioning large-scale community kitchen to create a hub for social inclusiveness and teach people about cooking, baking, canning or freezing food.

The Community Kitchen Project will get $5,000 if the entry makes it to the finals and then judges could reward them between $50,000 to $100,000.

Voting begins Monday, Sept. 29 at 9 a.m. on the Aviva Community Fund website. You can vote up to 15 times during each qualifying round, but you can only vote once per day, according to the rules posted on the site.

The contest runs until Oct. 13 after which the winners will be announced and the money will begin to flow.
