Rising water sparks state of emergency in Summerland neighbourhood

SUMMERLAND – The rising water in Okanagan Lake has forced the District of Summerland to issue a state of local emergency for the Trout Creek area east of Highway 97.

The declaration was made at 7:30 p.m. yesterday, May 30, after rising ground water in the area began encroaching on Summerland’s electrical system.

The District says in a media release water has reached elevations high enough to submerge electrical connections in underground vaults and junction boxes in a few isolated areas. Water reaching these electrical connection points could electrify water in the area, extending to surface where contact could be made.

Electricity was turned off to 13 properties and District staff attended each residence to speak with the homeowner.

Properties affected at present include:

  • 880 Johnson St.
  • 892 Johnson St.
  • 5827 Dale Ave.
  • 5849 Dale Ave.
  • 5853 Dale Ave.
  • 5861 Dale Ave.
  • 897 Lighthouse Landing
  • 908 Lighthouse Landing
  • 906 Lighthouse Landing
  • 902 Lighthouse Landing
  • 898 Lighthouse Landing
  • 894 Lighthouse Landing
  • 514 Wharf St.

The District says an evacuation order is not in effect at this time, adding residents may determine whether they wish to leave or stay. Emergency Support Services will be available to those leaving their homes.

With new predictions from Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations suggesting water levels on Okanagan Lake could rise another 10 cm, District staff are mapping properties that could be affected at that level.

A flood Communications Centre is expected to open this morning, May 31, at the municipal hall and more information will be made available to residents and businesses affected.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
