NEW YORK – Thirty-seven cities from Addis Ababa (AH’-dihs AH’-buh-bah), Ethiopia, to Yiwu (ee-oo), China, are rounding out a Rockefeller Foundation initiative that recognizes cities worldwide for working on physical, social and economic resilience.
The New York-based foundation announced the final additions to its 100 Resilient Cities contest Wednesday. They join others named in the last three years.
A full list can be found on the initiative’s website.
The foundation has committed over $160 million to the effort. It finances a “chief resilience officer” position for each city to address challenges that could range from flooding threats to strains on health systems. Cities also get technical help planning and implementing their strategies.
The hope is that the chosen cities will become models.
Over 1,000 cities applied.
