Lightning causes two fires in two minutes

VERNON – While the rest of Vernon was wet and rainy yesterday, a couple places were on fire.

They weren't big fires, but they drew crews of firefighters nonetheless. Deputy fire chief of operations Jack Blair says a series of lightning strikes caused two grass fires, one at 1:52 p.m. and another at 1:54 p.m.

The first fire, which lit up vegetation on Dunsmuir Road, was phoned in by a bystander who saw it ignite.

The second blaze was in the 6400 block of Okanagan Landing Road, where a small patch of trees and brush caught fire.

"The guys quickly got it all under control," Blair says.

Vernon is currently under a severe thunderstorm watch.
