TIFF and Instagram launch new digital shorts competition

TORONTO – The Toronto International Film Festival and Instagram have teamed up for a new digital shorts competition.

Directors Ava DuVernay and Xavier Dolan are among the jury members for the TIFFxInstagram Shorts Festival.

Filmmakers from around the world are invited to upload their original 60-second-or-less short using Instagram video.

The deadline for submissions to the competition, which opened Wednesday, is July 20.

TIFF programmers will select 30 finalists to be featured on its website and Instagram channel.

A six-person jury, which also includes music video director Nabil Elderkin and stop-motion animation artist Rachel Ryle, will then select one winner.

The film with the most “likes” on Instagram will also receive the Fan Favourite Award.

Awards will be announced Aug. 18.
