12 US soldiers arrested after bar fight in Italy

MILAN – Italian police say 12 U.S. soldiers stationed in the northern city of Vicenza have been arrested after a fight outside a nightclub.

Italian Carabinieri Lt. Col. Martino Salvo said one soldier was slashed in the arm inside the club early Sunday, provoking a fight with three Senegalese men outside. In all, four Americans and two Senegalese were injured. Three Senegalese were also arrested.

Salvo said it wasn’t clear what provoked the initial attack.

An Italian court this week said the 12 soldiers had been freed pending further court proceedings, while the soldier who was slashed faces a criminal complaint.

A base spokesman confirmed the incident involving soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade and said any disciplinary action by the military would be taken after the Italian proceedings.
