Powerful winds forecast for Okanagan troublesome given high lake levels

OKANAGAN – The wind forecast in an approaching weather system could lead to shoreline flooding and erosion on lakes in the Okanagan tomorrow.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of a low pressure system pushing in from the west coast tomorrow, June 14, that will bring southerly winds of between 30 to 40 kilometres per hour with gusts of up to 60 km/h.

"With high water levels in the Okanagan, these winds will generate waves that could lead to shoreline flooding and erosion," the statement says. "This risk is highest along shores exposed to the south."

The weather statement specifically mentions south facing shores on Osoyoos Lake, Skaha Lake and Okanagan Lake as at risk.

Environment Canada says the winds will ease off late tomorrow night and that the system is not expected to bring much rain with it.
