Kids of the North Okanagan: Here’s how you can get a free ice cream from the RCMP

VERNON – This summer, North Okanagan cops will reward kids wearing their bike helmets with a “ticket” for an ice cream cone.

The positive ticketing will take place from Saturday, June 17 to Sept. 6, Insp. Gord Stewart with the Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP says in a media release.

“While on patrol, our uniformed police officers will watching for children and youth who are wearing their helmet, walking their bike across cross walks, have proper reflectors and lights and are riding with courtesy to pedestrians and the motor vehicle traffic,” Stewart says in the release.

The officers will hand out a 'ticket' for a free ice cream cone or frosty treat from one of the participating restaurant locations in Vernon listed on the ticket. The detachment has partnered with restaurants including McDonald's, Wendy's, A&W and Burger King.

“When biking, a properly-fitted helmet is the best way to prevent head injuries and death,” Stewart says. “Ensure your child's helmet is worn level and covers their forehead. The straps should be fastened and adjusted so they are snug under the chin. Most likely, your little one grew over the past year so be sure to check the child's bike fits and the seat is adjusted to their height."

"Teach your child to follow the rules of the road, use hand signals and always stay visible.”
