Massive explosion at fireworks factory near Montreal

COTEAU-DU-LAC, – Quebec provincial police are investigating a massive explosion at a fireworks factory west of Montreal.

The explosion at BEM Fireworks happened this morning and images from the scene showed a building near a major highway completely destroyed.

A huge plume thick dark smoke could be seen emanating from the blast site, located in a small town not far from Valleyfield, Que., roughly 60 kilometres southwest of Montreal.

There were no immediate reports of injuries and the cause of the blast was not known.

According to its website, BEM has been designing and manufacturing pyrotechnics and fireworks for 25-years.

Town officials report that the highway in the vicinity is closed to traffic.
