Mounties warn radioactive device stolen from vehicle could burn skin

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Mounties have issued a warning about radioactive material contained in a potentially dangerous engineering device that is missing from a stolen truck in Kamloops, B.C.

Cpl. Cheryl Bush says the vehicle that was stolen was located but the owner reported a tool containing a capsule of the material was among the items taken.

The device emits gamma rays and was considered tamper-proof before it was stolen, but Bush says anyone who damages it could burn themselves or others.

Bush says the device should have a warning sticker on it and the box, which states it is radioactive.

Police say anyone who finds the tool that went missing Sunday should not handle it in case it’s been altered or damaged.

Anyone with information about its whereabouts is asked to call the RCMP.
