
Argonauts sign free agent linebacker Winston Venable, quarterback Jeff Matthews
TORONTO – Free agent linebacker Winston Venable agreed to terms with the Toronto Argonauts on Tuesday.
Sources tell The Canadian Press that the deal is for two years.
The veteran linebacker finished fifth in the CFL with 88 tackles last season, giving the Montreal Alouettes a solid 1-2 punch with Bear Woods (126 tackles, second overall).
The five-foot-11, 220-pound Venable also registered seven sacks in his fourth CFL campaign with the Als.
Earlier Tuesday, Toronto signed free-agent quarterback Jeff Mathews on a two-year contract.
The six-foot-four, 225-pound Mathews spent the last three seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats playing for head coach Kent Austin, his former coach at Cornell.
Mathews, 25, completed 18-of-29 passes for 209 yards and a TD last year with Hamilton. He played a total of 10 games with the Ticats, completing 136-of-206 passes for 1,659 yards with seven TDs and nine interceptions.
