Olivia, Oliver top B.C. charts as most popular baby names in 2019

VICTORIA – Olivia outstrips Oliver as the most popular name for babies born this year in British Columbia.

The Ministry of Health has released preliminary figures from the Vital Statistics Agency revealing most of the first names of the 40,978 babies born in B.C. between Jan. 1 and Dec. 18, 2019.

Olivia and Oliver are followed in popularity by the names Lucas, Liam, Ethan, Noah, William, Benjamin, Charlotte, Emma and Leo.

Liam claimed the overall most popular name last year, just ahead of Olivia, while Amelia made the 2018 list but was edged out by Leo this year.

Only names that occur five or more times in a given year are added to the annual tally of popular choices.

Names that occurred just five times last year range from Artemis and Archie to Pippa and Irene.
