Police ID pedestrian killed after being hit by Amtrak train
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – A Vermont police department says a 56-year-old man was killed when he tripped and fell trying to cross railroad tracks in front of an oncoming Amtrak passenger train in Northfield.
Witnesses told Northfield police that Scott Benoir tried to get out of the way of the train, which was sounding its horn, but he was unable to. He was reported dead at the scene.
The collision was reported just before 10:40 a.m. Thursday.
Amtrak Spokesman Jason Abrams says there were no injuries on the train, which resumed its run about 1:45 p.m.
The incident remains under investigation.
In 2015, seven people were injured when the Amtrak Vermonter derailed in Northfield after a piece of ledge broke off and fell onto the tracks.
