Former NDP candidate running for council

KELOWNA – A controversial former NDP provincial candidate announced her return to Kelowna politics Tuesday.

Dayleen Van Ryswyk says she will run for a seat on Kelowna Council in the upcoming November municipal election.

Van Ryswyk, a former NDP candidate for the Kelowna-Mission riding, was forced out of the race after comments about First Nations and French Canadians she made on an internet forum years prior went public.

Following her resignation, Van Ryswyk issued a public apology and announced she would run as an independent candidate.

She also ran for council in the 2011 election but was unsuccessful.

“Every day, I see our democracy eroding, with closed door meetings and agreements that aren’t made public. Agreements that the electorate wasn’t consulted on, but yet, are financially obligated to honour,” she writes in the press release.

As president of Okanagan Koi & Water Gardens Inc., Van Ryswyk says she is well suited to the role of councillor.

“I am a successful, no-nonsense business woman, who isn’t afraid to question the status quo,” she says. “I am committed to being fiscally responsible with a common sense approach, and I will bring accountability to city hall.”

  2. Just to be clear, You stated that I issued an apology. Yes, I did apologize, but my apology was to anyone who I may have offended by my remarks, NOT for what I said. I stand behind what I said. In the past year, mainstream media has brought forward very compelling stats, that confirm my comments were supported by fact. One only needs to see my “links” page on my web site for the myriad of articles and reports that have come out in the past year. The taxpayer has been left out of the consultation process, for this issue, and many other issues, municipally, provincially and federally. It’s time for a change!
