BALTIMORE – A Baltimore police commander is being investigated over the use of charity funds.
The Baltimore Sun reports the case was exposed during Maj. Kimberly Burrus’ divorce.
Spokesman T.J. Smith says city police are investigating internally. Melba Saunders, a spokeswoman for Baltimore’s prosecutor, wouldn’t comment.
Burrus founded a non-profit to improve police-community relations after the death of Freddie Gray in police custody.
The Sun says Burrus and her husband, Torran Burrus, said during a custody hearing that she’s being investigated for spending $2,000 on vacation tickets. Kimberly Burrus said she spent more of her money on the non-profit than she spent on the flights.
Neither Burrus nor her attorney responded to the Sun’s requests for comment. Torran Burrus declined through an attorney to comment.
It’s the latest bad news for the scandal-plagued police force, whose commissioner resigned last month for failing to file his taxes.
