First summer weekend busy with events in Penticton

PENTICTON – Penticton’s main streets and downtown core will be busy this weekend as two big events mark the start of the first summer weekend.

The Peach City Beach Cruise begins today, June 23 with three days of fun, food, entertainment and hundreds of classic, collector, antique and show cars.

The show begins tonight at 7 p.m., and continues Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., and on Sunday from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. For more information, see the Peach City Beach Cruise web page.

The Pacific Northwest Elvis Festival runs through to Sunday, June 25. The 15th annual Elvis Festival competition is held in Okanagan Lake Park with the headliner show and finals taking place at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre. Opening ceremonies begin at noon today, June 23 at Okanagan Lake Park. Th cost is $25 for both days or $15 each day. Tiger Moon returns to The Dream Cafe on Friday, June 23, starting at 8 p.m. Saturday’s entertainment is internationally recognized artist Ezra Keizera, also with a showtime start of 8 p.m. For more information, contact The Dream Cafe at 250-490-9012.

The Downtown Community Market runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 24.

The Penticton Farmer’s Market moves a few blocks up Main Street to make room for the Peach City Beach Cruise. The market operates from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the 500 and 600 blocks of Main Street this week and next only.

The Summerland Rotary Market happens Sunday, June 25 on Main Street in Summerland from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The annual Dirty Book Sale takes place at Penticton Library and Museum on Saturday, June 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Penticton Library. Proceeds go to support collection and programming at the library. For more information, call the Public Library Information Desk at 250-770-7782.

Tinhorn Creek presents the Julian Taylor Band at the winery’s amphitheatre, on Saturday, June 24 starting at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $35, with a return shuttle operating out of Penticton and Osoyoos for $20.

The Canadian Mental Health Association South Okanagan Similkameen region hosts the Ride Don’t Hide event on Saturday,  June 25, starting at 8:30 a.m. All funds go to provide wellness programs, support for the meals program, volunteer program and the local group program assisting individuals dealing with the stresses of everyday life. Steve Arstad

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
