The Latest: Rescuers free California man from cement mixer

UNION CITY, Calif. – The Latest on the rescue of a man trapped in a Northern California cement mixer (all times local):

7:40 p.m.

Authorities have rescued a man who became trapped for two hours in a huge mixer full of dry cement in Northern California.

Firefighters in Alameda County were called to U.S. Pipe and Foundry in Union City, east of San Francisco, at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

A worker told KTVU-TV that a 27-year-old supervisor was looking into the two-story industrial hopper when he lost his balance and fell. He was stuck up to his waist in dry cement.

County fire officials say they secured the man with a harness to prevent him from sinking deeper and drained the cement from the bottom of the hopper.

The man was given oxygen and finally pulled up at around 6:30 p.m.

There’s no word on his condition but he managed to stand and walk before he was taken to an ambulance.

Northern California rescue workers were trying to free a man stuck in a two-story industrial cement mixing facility.

Alameda County Fire Department officials responded to a call at a pipe manufacturer Thursday afternoon in Union City, about 30 miles (48 kilometres) east of San Francisco. The department said a man was trapped in a large facility used to mix cement.

KTVU-TV reported that firefighters had attached a harness to the man to prevent him from slipping any further, and they were working to drain any remaining product.

No other information was released.
